West Virginia State Capital

West Virginia State Capitol is one of the most prominent landmarks, known for its beautiful golden dome. The Capital building is located on the Capitol Complex which includes the Governor's Mansion and other state offices. You can take a tour on the inside if you sign up on the websites ahead of time. However, it is free to walk on in without scheduling a tour. You could visit the House of Delegates chamber and the Senate chamber without a tour.

The West Virginia State Museum, located in Charleston, is a must-visit destination for anyone interested in the history, culture, and natural beauty of the Mountain State. Located on the State Capitol Complex, this museum offers a journey through the state’s rich past, from prehistoric times to the modern day. The museum showcases an extensive collection of artifacts that tell the story of West Virginia’s history, including its indigenous peoples, the Civil War, the state's coal mining heritage, and its contributions to the Industrial Revolution. You can engage with interactive exhibits from different Discovery Rooms while looking at the artifacts that tell the story of West Virginia History.

Clay Center for Arts & Sciences

This state-of-the-art facility offers a variety of experiences that cater to all ages, making it a must-see destination for travelers exploring the city. The museum section in Clay Center offers a lot of activities for kids ages 3 and up. My favorite section in the museum is the interactive “My Town” where kids can role-play with their parents and friends while living in the town of Charleston. The town features everything from a bank, grocery store, hospital, restaurant, and even interactive games like building a bridge or bringing water supplies to the town.  It’s a fun place to visit and explore. Whether you're attending a concert, exploring a museum exhibit, or catching a planetarium show, the Clay Center provides a unique and exciting cultural experience.

SoHo’s the market’s most popular restaurant, serves up traditional Italian cuisine with a modern twist. Whether you're in the mood for a hearty sandwich, a fresh salad, a hand-tossed pizza, or their famous in-house soup, Soho's is a must-try for food lovers. Capitol Market is the perfect spot to experience local culture, enjoy a delicious meal, and shop for fresh, seasonal products. Downtown Charleston, West Virginia, is a charming and lively destination that offers a perfect blend of history, culture, and modern attractions. Nestled along the scenic Kanawha River, this walkable downtown area is home to unique local shops, dining spots, and cultural landmarks that showcase the city’s rich heritage. A must-see for visitors is the historic Capitol Street. The street is lined with beautifully preserved buildings, boutique stores, cafes, and restaurants. It’s the perfect place to take a stroll, shop for local goods, and enjoy a cup of coffee at a sidewalk café. Highly recommend visiting the Kanawha Public Library and the Taylor Bookstore. I’m not a big fan of reading but the historic vibes of the bookstore make it warm and comfortable to sit in there and study. At the end of Capital Street sits the Haddad Riverfront Park. The Riverfront Park offers scenic views of the Kanawha River and hosts live music, festivals, and events throughout the year. It’s a great spot to relax and soak in the atmosphere of the city. Wasn't able to visit the Riverfront because it was raining.
